Greek and Athens Snow Globes
Donkeys were a traditional means of transportation, especially in villagesand mountainous areas throughout Greek history . Everything from people and food and goods from other countries would be transported by donkeys. The globe also contains a man in national dress.
Windmills for grinding wheat have been mentioned in Greek history for 1500 years but became common place in the 12th and 13th centuries. and many survive from that time and later. The traditional form of Greek stone windmill loved by photographers, artists and travellers is white washed with a conical top and white sails. They are found in windy places above villages across Greece and its islands.
The Parthenon is one of the most famous buildings in the world. It is a marble temple built in the 5th century during the classical Greek Empire to commemorate the recent Greek victory over the Persians. It is dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena, and sits on a hill as part of the acropolis. It has survived fire, wars, explosions earthquakes, and looting whilst being used as a Christian church, mosque and Ottoman munitions dump.
A caryatid is a sculpted female figure used as decorated columns supporting Greek temples and other buildings The most famous are from the Erechtheion temple on the Acropolis. The originals are in the Acropolis museum to avoid air pollution, only replicas remain at the temple. The globe does not do the originals much justice.
